Discover a New Chapter
for Japan’s Timeless Kimono Heritage
In Japan, the art of kimono has been cherished for centuries, evolving from the elegant court clothing of the Nara and Heian periods, such as the magnificent Junihitoe, into one of the most refined expressions of Japanese culture.
For generations, families preserved these beautifully crafted clothing with great care. Each kimono carries its own story — of artistry, celebration, and family heritage — woven into its silk and patterns.
Today, many of these treasured kimonos remain carefully stored, waiting for a new way to be appreciated and shared with future generations.
At Echizen Kimono Hyousou, we believe this remarkable cultural legacy should continue to live on.
Our mission is to transform these extraordinary clothing into Sustainable Art that bridges tradition with modern living.
Using the unparalleled craftsmanship of Echizen Washi — a paper with over 1500 years of history renowned for its beauty and refinement — we carefully reinterpret cherished kimonos into timeless works of art.
Imagine the vibrant silk of an ancestral kimono, once worn on special occasions, now displayed as a striking piece of art within a contemporary space.
More than decoration, it becomes
a story passed down,

Four reasons to choose
Echizen Kimono Hyousou
-
01
1,500 years of history The Reason for Its Durability for over a
Thousand YearsEchizen boasts a history of approximately 1500 years as one of Japan’s oldest washi-making regions.
Kozo (paper mulberry) has been a primary ingredient for Echizen washi. Traditional method of intertwining long fibers from Kozo makes it tear-resistant and prevents deterioration.
The fact that many documents stored in the Shosoin Archive remain intact proves its durability.
Due to these reasons, Echizen washi paper has been chosen as the material to preserve precious kimonos not only for today’s but also for future generations. -
02
The Japanese Tradition of "Lining" The craftsmanship of Miyamori revives and
protects Kimono fabric.Lining is a unique Japanese mounting technique in which a layer of washi paper is applied to the underside of a kimono to straighten out any distortions in the fabric and increase its strength.
Echizen kimono mounting requires delicate techniques to finely adjust the glue and the brushing pressure after carefully examining wrinkles and fiber orientation.
This process makes the silk’s natural luster and texture to remain beautiful and long lasting.
Mounter Miyamori’s artisanal technique, which cannot be replicated by any machines, embodies his sensitivity to “read the fabric.” -
03
Harmony with modern spaces Japanese art pieces create harmony
in Westernized spacesEchizen kimono mounting emphasizes a Japanese aesthetic that appeals not through ornamentation but through negative space and the texture of materials.
To highlight the colors and patterns of the kimono itself, the frames and the fabrics used for lining are designed to be modest,
resulting in creating a natural harmony with minimalist modern architecture and overseas interiors.
Mounting technique made it possible to transcend the boundaries of Japanese arts and Western-style rooms, serving as an art piece that enhances “the quality of space” such as hotel lobbies, galleries, residences and many more. -
04
Differences from mass-produced arts What cannot be accomplished by mass-produced items
Mass-produced mountings are usually made based on standard size and materials in an identical machine process.
While their artworks are identically uniformed, the characteristics of each fabric are ignored.
Echizen kimono Hyousou, on the other hand, carefully examines the condition, age, weave, and dye of each kimono, creating a completely unique art piece.
Each process of washi paper, fabric, and lining are all done by hand, which takes time but maximizes the beauty and longevity of the fabric.
Kimono mounting is not only for display but also for preservation of Japanese culture.
Sustainable Japanese artworks that blend seamlessly into everyday life.
