Discover a New Chapter
for Japan’s Timeless Kimono Heritage
In Japan, the art of kimono has been cherished for centuries, evolving from the elegant court garments of the Nara and Heian periods, such as the magnificent Junihitoe, into one of the most refined expressions of Japanese culture.
For generations, families preserved these beautifully crafted garments with great care. Each kimono carries its own story — of artistry, celebration, and family heritage — woven into its silk and patterns.
Today, many of these treasured kimonos remain carefully stored, waiting for a new way to be appreciated and shared with future generations.
At Echizen Kimono Hyoso, we believe this remarkable cultural legacy should continue to live on.
Our mission is to transform these extraordinary garments into Sustainable Art that bridges tradition with modern living.
Using the unparalleled craftsmanship of Echizen Washi — a paper with over 1500 years of history renowned for its beauty and refinement — we carefully reinterpret cherished kimonos into timeless works of art.
Imagine the vibrant silk of an ancestral kimono, once worn on special occasions, now displayed as a striking piece of art within a contemporary space.
More than decoration, it becomes
a story passed down,
a symbol of sustainable luxury,
and a living connection to Japan’s cultural heritage.
Whether you choose a masterpiece created by our artisans,
or wish to transform your own heirloom kimono through our bespoke workshop,
we invite you to experience this unique fusion of history, art, and sustainability.
Together, we carry this beauty forward —
honoring the past while shaping the future.

01
1,500 years of history A culture passed down for over a thousand years
Echizen washi paper, used for Echizen kimono mounting, boasts a history of approximately 1,500 years as one of Japan's oldest washi paper production areas.
Its traditional manufacturing method, primarily using kozo (paper mulberry) and interweaving long fibers, has long supported numerous cultural properties and documents.
The fact that many Shōsōin documents and ancient manuscripts still retain their form today is testament to how washi has been treasured and passed down within Japanese culture.
Echizen kimono mounting employs materials cultivated over this long history, preserving cherished kimonos not only for the present but also for future generations. -
02
The Japanese Tradition of "Backing" The craftsmanship of Miyamori, the mounter,
preserves and preserves the kimono fabric.Backing is a uniquely Japanese mounting technique in which a layer of washi paper is applied to the underside of a kimono to straighten out any distortions in the fabric and increase its strength.
Echizen kimono mounting involves carefully examining each kimono’s wrinkles and fiber orientation,
finishing the finish by fine-tuning the thickness of the glue and brush pressure.
This process preserves the silk’s natural luster and texture,
ensuring a beautiful, long-lasting piece.
This technique, which cannot be replicated by machine, embodies Miyamori’s artisanal sensitivity to “read the fabric.” -
03
Harmony with modern spaces Japanese art pieces create harmony
in a Western spaceEchizen kimono mounting emphasizes the Japanese aesthetic of using white space and texture rather than making a statement with decoration.
To highlight the colors and patterns of the kimono itself,
the frames and fabrics are designed to be understated, resulting in a natural harmony with minimalist modern architecture and overseas interiors.
The mounting transcends the boundaries of Japanese and Western rooms,
making it a fitting art piece to enhance the quality of space in hotel lobbies, galleries, residences, and more. -
04
Differences from mass-produced art What cannot be done with mass-produced items
Many mass-produced mountings are made based on standard sizes, standard materials, and machine processes.
While they are uniform and stable, they do not reflect the individuality of each fabric.
Echizen kimono mounting, on the other hand, carefully examines the condition, age, weave, and dye of each kimono, designing it as a completely unique piece.
The processes of washi paper, fabric, and backing are all done by hand, which takes time but maximizes the beauty and longevity of the fabric.
It is not just for display, but a mounting that preserves the culture.

I'd like to bring in my kimono for an order. Is it okay if it has stains or tears?
Yes, we will mount your kimono as a framed artwork, avoiding any stains or tears, so please feel free to send or bring it in.
Do you have any plans to restock items that are currently sold out?
We sincerely apologize. Sold-out items are often crafted using the most beautiful pattern section of the kimono, making it impossible to recreate an identical piece.
As each work is a one-of-a-kind creation, it is exclusively owned by the purchaser. We deeply regret any inconvenience.
However, it may be possible to use other sections of the kimono for a framed artwork. Please feel free to inquire.
What is the delivery time?
Please allow 2 months for completion.
As we work on multiple pieces simultaneously, additional time may be required depending on our workload.
Turnaround times also vary by piece type, so please inquire first.
Can you choose which part of the handle to use?
We will generally select recommended locations for you, but you may also choose your own.
Please let us know your preferred location and desired image.
